Roster Rumblings: Polanco close with Philly; Type A relievers to Detroit?
- The Phillies did not hesitate to go after the second third baseman that they want. Trying out an idea someone came up with in the Mack Avenue Tigers comments section -- my apologies, I can't remember who exactly -- Philadelphia is said to be close to signing Placido Polanco to a three-year, $18 million deal to play third base. MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports the deal is pending a physical. (Hat-tip MLB Trade Rumors)
- The Cutoff Man's James Schmehl wonders if the Tigers should pursue relievers Mike Gonzalez or Rafael Soriano. He says up front it is unlikely the Tigers would sign a Type A free agent, but wondered if Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski's past success in dealing with agent Scott Boras could help get something done.
- I am all for paying the cost of a lock-down closer ... when the rest of the team is already good. Or if the closer's name sounds something like "Joe Nathan." But the Tigers are not in the right place to even be considering closers right now, they have too many holes elsewhere and too much money on the 2010 payroll.
- The Cubs might be interested in Curtis Granderson, but not until they move Milton Bradley, Phil Rogers reports. The Cubs aren't ready to part with shortstop prospect Starlin Castro, however. Rogers also reports the Tigers are looking for multiple major-league ready players for Jackson. (MLB Trade Rumors)
"I'm still wearing the old English 'D,' " Granderson told the Tribune today at a meeting of the players union's executive board. "I'm getting ready to go to Lakeland [Fla.] for spring training. That's the only clarification I have at this point.''
